Food Delivery Essentials

Gear for Safe, Speedy Deliveries

Delivering food, groceries, or other products, is a task that demands efficiency, safety, and convenience. Equipping yourself with the right tools can make all the difference. Let’s dive into how having the proper equipment can transform your delivery experience.

1. Insulated Bag: More Than Just Keeping It Fresh

An insulated bag is a must-have for food delivery. It helps maintain the right temperature, ensuring that hot food stays hot and cold food stays cold. This is crucial for customer satisfaction, as no one wants their ice cream melted or their pizza cold. However, the main reason for a good bag is to make carrying the order easier. It prevents spills in your car and the bottom falling out of a soggy paper bag on someone’s driveway. Have you ever tried to carry your phone, drinks, and a bag that is rolled up and taped down like a football? Or a bag with handles that come off the bag? Or holding the handles rips the stickers so it looks like you were eating their fries? Not to mention you still have your car keys and you have to close your car door, maybe open an apartment door. 2 hands are just not enough. This is why a solid bag with handles is a must have. Also, if you deliver for multiple platforms, its nice to have a bag that doesn’t say anything. People get confused when they ordered UberEats and you are walking up with a DoorDash bag.

This is the bag that I have used since 2019 for 1,000’s of deliveries. They are still working great. No holes, rips, or broken zippers. Although, I don’t always zip it closed. I also cut a piece of a cardboard box to fit in the bottom. This gives the bag more shape and stability.

 2. Flashlight: Illuminating Your Path

A reliable flashlight is indispensable for nighttime deliveries or dimly lit areas. It not only helps you see clearly but also makes you visible to others, reducing the risk of accidents. An LED flashlight is a great choice because it's durable, energy-efficient, and provides bright illumination. Whether you're searching for the correct house number or navigating tricky pathways, a good flashlight ensures you’re always on the right track.

Again, I have used this flashlight since 2019. It is rugged and I can see house numbers from the street. Please note that if you buy one, it comes with batteries. If you get the 2-pack, which I did, you will need to buy batteries separately. Just add some to your order if you don’t have any AAA’s at home.

 3. Pepper Spray: Your Safety Companion

Safety is paramount, especially when making deliveries late at night or in unfamiliar areas. Carrying pepper spray provides a sense of security and can be a lifesaver in emergency situations. It’s a small, easy-to-carry tool that can help you feel more confident on the job, knowing you have a means of self-defense if needed. I have this mostly in case there is a loose dog that comes after me. I love dogs, I am not afraid of them. But I do respect that I may be walking up on their property and maybe at night. Honestly, I have never sprayed this so I can only assume it works well.

 4. Wagon: For the Heavy Lifting

A sturdy wagon can be a game-changer for deliveries involving heavy or multiple items. Instead of making multiple trips or straining your back, a wagon allows you to transport everything in one go. Look for a foldable, lightweight model that’s easy to store in your vehicle. This equipment not only saves time but also reduces physical strain, making your delivery tasks much easier.

Wagons are extremely helpful for groceries. They do vary greatly so I don’t have a one size fits all answer here. Consider the size you will need, the terrain you will be on, the maximum weight you will be carrying, and how much you want to spend. I have linked some great options.

5. Phone Charger: Staying Powered Up

A portable phone charger is essential for any delivery driver. Your phone is your lifeline for navigation, customer communication, and order tracking. A dead battery can bring your operations to a halt. Investing in a reliable power bank ensures your phone is always charged, keeping you connected and on track throughout your delivery shifts.

The Anker Powercore battery that I have been using since 2017 is still going strong. However, that exact model is no longer available. So feel free to pick one of these to fit your needs and budget.

Putting It All Together

The right equipment makes your delivery job faster, easier, and safer. A well-lit path with a flashlight, fresh food with an insulated bag, personal safety with pepper spray, and effortless transport with a wagon—all these tools contribute to a seamless and efficient delivery experience. By investing in these essentials, you’re not just making your job more manageable, you’re also enhancing your service quality, which can lead to happier customers and better business. Happy delivering!
